In 1948, a young Jae-chul Shin began his martial arts journey under the legendary Grandmaster Hwang Kee at Seoul Moo Duk Kwan Central Gym. While pursuing degrees in political science at Korea University, Shin also taught martial arts at the university, Seoul Central YMCA, and various military and police institutions. His academic pursuits paralleled his dedication to teaching, demonstrating his deep commitment to both intellectual and physical education.

In 1968, sponsored by his student, Chuck Norris, Shin moved to the U.S. to extend his martial teachings. He founded the U.S. Tang Soo Do Federation in New Jersey, profoundly influencing American martial arts. In 1982, seeking to preserve the traditional values of Tang Soo Do, he established the World Tang Soo Do Association, which today boasts over 150,000 members worldwide.
